No culprit will be spared, says Prime Minister Modi on brutal rapes
Apr 13, 2018 10:53 AM

In his first comments on the brutal gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said such Incidents cannot be part of a civilised society.

"As a country, as a society we all are ashamed of it. I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done. Our daughters will definitely get justice," he said at a function to mark the birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution.

He was referring to the incident that happened in Kashmir as well as the rape of a 16-year-old in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, which have triggered anger and outrage across India.

Earlier in the day, Congress president Rahul Gandhi urged the PM to speak on the issue and termed the latter's silence as unacceptable.

Gandhi led a midnight candle-light march on Thursday to India Gate in New Delhi to protest the two incidents.

In Kathua, an eight-year old girl belonging to a nomadic community -- Bakherwal -- was found dead in January.

The police charge-sheet read that the girl was gang-raped repeatedly inside a village temple. She was sedated, held captive for a week and hit with a large stone by her rapists to make sure she was dead.

A Special Investigation Team, formed to probe the incident, has arrested eight people, including two special police officers (SPOs) and a head constable, who was charged with destroying evidence.

Meanwhile, BJP ministers Lal Singh, Chander Prakash, who took part in rally in support of Kathua gangrape accused, submit resignation to Jammu and Kashmir party chief.

The Unnao case came to light after the girl attempted suicide outside Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath's residence in capital city of Lucknow.

She said that BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar, with his brother and others, raped her in June 2017 but the police refused to file her FIR.

In the first week of April 2018, a fight broke out between the girl's and Sengar's family which led to the police arresting the former's father.

Six policemen were suspended after the girl's father died on April 9 at a district hospital where he was brought after he complained of abdominal pain and vomiting.

On April 12, 2018, the case was handed over to the CBI.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
