The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down 0.4%, while the Dow Jones fell by 0.3%.
Asian exchanges were mixed at closing, while European markets were higher midday.
Early movers include Rigetti Computing (RGTI), which was up over 7%, and QuantumScape (QS), which was over 6% higher pre-bell.
Nebius Group (NBIS) and Cel-Sci (CVM) are among the companies releasing quarterly results within the day.
On the economic calendar, November data on International Trade in Goods posts at 8:30 am ET. The EIA Natural Gas Report will be released at 10:30 am and the EIA Petroleum Status Report at 1 pm.
In premarket action, Bitcoin traded at $96,419.60, West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up 0.7% at $70.13, and 10-year US Treasuries offered 4.6%. Spot gold traded for $2,626.49 an ounce.
