Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Softer in Afternoon Trading

01:50 PM EST, 01/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were lower Wednesday afternoon, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) shedding 0.4% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) down 0.3%.

Redbook US same-store sales last week rose 4.5% from a year earlier after a 4% increase in the previous week.

In corporate news, Netflix ( NFLX ) shares jumped 10%, a day after the company reported subscriber growth and earnings that topped estimates by analysts.

Procter & Gamble's ( PG ) fiscal Q2 results rose more than analysts expected, buoyed by revenue gains across the majority of business segments. The shares gained 2.5%.

Host Hotels & Resorts ( HST ) is planning to sell a portfolio of 10 hotel properties for over $1 billion, Bloomberg reported. The shares added 0.6%.
