03:26 PM EST, 01/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks rose late Tuesday afternoon with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) up 0.2% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) increasing 0.4%.

In corporate news, Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) is cutting 270 pilot positions in Denver and Atlanta. The shares rose 2.8%.

Asian markets traded at two-year high, while US markets were closed on account of the Independence Day. Indian shares settled with gains in the previous session, rising for the fourth straight day. At 7.00 AM, the SGX Nifty futures traded unchanged at 11,980, indicating a muted start for the Sensex and the Nifty 50.
