12:24 PM EST, 11/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Boeing ( BA ) is issuing layoff notices starting Wednesday to employees affected by a previously announced 10% workforce reduction, about 17,000 jobs, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.

US workers who will get their notices this week will remain on the company's payroll until January in compliance with federal requirements on notifying workers 60 days before their employment ends, Reuters reported.

For a long time, Boeing ( BA ) used the method of bringing furloughed workers back to work, during the Covid-era, layoffs triggered an exodus, Bloomberg reported. Washington, where Boeing ( BA ) builds commercial jetliners, other companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origins are headhunting for aviation engineers and mechanics.

Boeing ( BA ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.

Boeing ( BA ) shares were down more than 2% in recent trading.
