Stock Futures Rise as Traders Await More Earnings; Asia Mostly Up, Europe Falls

07:23 AM EDT, 07/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US equity futures edged higher before the open Tuesday as investors await earnings from some major banks.

Standard & Poor's 500 and the Nasdaq rose 0.2% each in the premarket, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 0.1%. Asian exchanges were mostly trending upwards while European bourses were heading south midday on the continent.

Bank of America ( BAC ) reported second-quarter earnings before the bell, coming in at $0.83, compared with $0.88 last year.

Morgan Stanley ( MS ) , PNC Financial Services ( PNC ) and State Street (STT) also report their latest quarterly results before the open, among others. Omnicom Group ( OMC ) and J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) report earnings in the afterhours.

UnitedHealth ( UNH ) shares declined 0.8% before the bell after the health insurer maintained its full-year outlook, as it continues to absorb the impact of the cybersecurity incident involving its Change Healthcare unit earlier in the year. GameStop ( GME ) gained 1.2% while Tesla (TSLA) advanced 1.7%.

On the economic calendar, the retail sales report for June is out at 8:30 am ET, along with the import and export prices report for the same month. The business inventories report for May and the housing market index for July are due at 10 am.

Federal Reserve Board Governor Adriana Kugler is scheduled to speak at 2:45 pm.

Before the open, bitcoin slipped 0.1% to $63,505, West Texas Intermediate crude oil fell 1.4% to $80.76 a barrel, yields on 10-year Treasuries dropped 4.6 basis points to 4.18% and gold rose 0.7% to $2,445 an ounce.
