The Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is likely to extend the deadline for feedback on the draft ecommerce norms from March 9 to March 31, sources privy to the developments told CNBC-TV18.

This move comes after ecommerce companies sought an extension of the deadline for more analysis and assessment of the national proposed policy.

The government on February 23 released the draft national ecommerce policy proposing setting up a legal and technological framework for restrictions on cross-border data flow and also laid out conditions for businesses regarding collection or processing of sensitive data locally and storing it abroad.

Calling issues of data sharing and localisation most complex, the ecommerce companies on Tuesday said the draft national ecommerce policy is wide and complex.

The 42-page draft addresses six broad issues of the e-commerce ecosystem -- data, infrastructure development, e-commerce marketplaces, regulatory issues, stimulating domestic digital economy and export promotion through e-commerce.

Accepting the proposal for an extension, the government may consider industry demand favourably, according to multiple people familiar with the development.
