A complaint has been received against Bharti Telemedia under the anti-profiteering provisions of GST, alleging that the company has failed to pass on the benefits to customers, sources told CNBC-TV18.
The National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA) is expected to issue its final order soon regarding the same.
Bharti Telemedia Limited, which was established in 2006, offers direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television broadcast services. The company also provides digital television and broadband services.
“Total indirect tax on services provided by Bharti Telemedia prior to GST was 25-40 percent and post-GST was reduced to 18 percent and thus the company did not revise the taxes reducing the burden for consumers,” the sources, who did not want to be named, added.
This is a first of its kind complaint received under anti-profiteering provisions of GST for not passing on the benefit of reduced tax post rollout of GST since the anti-profiteering measures deal with the revision in taxes post the rollout of GST.
The sources added that there is merit in the case considering that the government had promised that with the rollout of GST, taxes will reduce significantly for the consumers.
In an email response to CNBC-TV18, an Airtel spokesperson said, “We have not received any such notice in the recent past and are unable to comment on the same. Needless to say, Airtel sets a high bar when it comes to corporate governance and compliance.”
