Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sachin Pilot has won the Tonk assembly constituency, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) only Muslim candidate in the state and transport minister Yoonus Khan.
It was the first assembly elections for 41-year old Pilot, a two-time Member of Parliament, and he defeated Khan with a margin of 54,179 votes on the Muslim-dominated seat. The margin likely is the highest in Rajasthan so far for any candidate.
The win comes thanks to a widespread disquiet over farm distress and a lack of jobs for growing numbers of young people in the state.
Ajit Singh Mehta of BJP had won the elections last time from Tonk. He had defeated Congress’ Sakiya Saud.
So far, the Congress and the BJP has won 18 seats each, while the BSP has bagged three. Also, three independents and one candidate from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have won. Bhartiya Tribal Party has also won two.
The Congress was leading in 82 seats, while the BJP was ahead in 60 seats. BSP gained in 3 seats, while CPM was ahead in 1 seat. Independents and others were leading in 13 seats.
