The state of Rajasthan goes to polls in barely three weeks and ahead of that CNBC-TV18 traveled to Johri Bazaar, the biggest market in Jaipur, to get a sense of how the business is doing after the goods and services tax (GST).
The traders, whom CNBC-TV18 spoke to, felt neglected by the centre and the state. According to them, the government has not focused on small traders and market sales have fallen by at least 40 percent.
Johri Bazaar, located at the heart of Jaipur, is the Pink City’s biggest market. It is crowded and full of colour and popular among the residents of Jaipur and tourists for gold and silver jewelry, clothes, handicrafts and mouth-watering Rajasthani delicacies. Traders call it the economic lifeline of Jaipur but ahead of elections, they are worried about the market sentiment.
Jewelers said that the 3 percent goods and services tax (GST) rate and demonetisation has turned customers away and has forced smaller traders to reduce staff as well.
