The outrage against Citizenship Amendment Act is sending ripples across the country. Fresh clashes broke out between the police and protesters in Delhi's Jafrabad and Seelampur areas. Scores of people had gathered there to protest against the contentious citizenship law, a school bus was damaged and a police picket was set on fire during the protests.

In Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a protest march in the Jadavpur area, Trinamool Congress MPs Mimi Chakraborty & Nusrat Jahan also joined Mamata in the protest march. The Chief Minister claimed that 30 people have committed suicide due to the fear of NRC in her state.

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK led by MK Stalin held protest against the act in Kanchipuram. The party also held a simultaneous rally in Chennai led by DMK leaders Kanimozhi and Dayanidhi Maran. DMK has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

In Kerala, various organisations held protests in Trivandrum, the state police arrested over 230 protesters as a preventive action. In Uttar Pradesh, BSP Chief Mayawati held a press conference demanding withdrawal of the citizenship act. She said that the BJP led government should not create emergency like circumstances in the country.

The Supreme Court has directed that pleas against the violent police crackdown on students of Jamia Millia and Aligarh Muslim University should be taken to the respective high courts where the incidents have occurred. The apex court while passing the buck to the high courts also refused to give any interim protection to students as sought by the petitioners.
