Mamata Banerjee calls off dharna
Feb 5, 2019 11:23 AM

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called off her dharna against the CBI attempting to question the city police chief in ponzi scam cases.

Calling off her sit-in on its third day, Banerjee said she was doing so after consulting leaders of major opposition parties and following "a favourable court order".

She had been sitting on the dharna since Sunday night at the Metro channel in Esplanade area, the spot where she had held a 26-day fast against the acquisition of farm land for the Tata Motors small car unit at Singur in 2006.

Opposition leaders like Chandrababu Naidu of TDP, Tejashwi Yadav of RJD and Kanimozhi of DMK had visited her at the dharna spot.

The Supreme Court had earlier in the day directed Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear before the CBI and "faithfully" cooperate into the investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam, while it making it clear that he will not be arrested.

To avoid all "unnecessary controversy", the apex court also directed the commissioner of Kolkata police to appear before the investigating agency at a neutral place in Shillong, on such dates as may be fixed by the probe agency.

Maharashtra political crisis highlights: Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Thursday at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. Former CM Devendra Fadnavis took the oath as the Shinde's deputy. Shinde, who was camping in Guwahati with rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, returned to Mumbai on from Goa on Thursday afternoon, following which he and Fadnavis met the Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to stake claim to form the government. Later in the day Fadnavis announced that Shinde would be sworn in as the new chief minister today. Fadnavis had said he didn't want to be a part of the government. However, BJP's national president JP Nadda later said that that the party's leadership thought it was important for Fadnavis to be a part of the cabinet. On Wednesday, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as the Maharashtra chief minister, just after the Supreme Court refused to stay the Governor's directive to his government to take a floor test in the Assembly. Thackeray's resignation capped a week-long drama of resort politics, where rebel Shiv Sena MLAs led by minister Eknath Shinde camped in luxury hotels and hopped on chartered jets from Mumbai to Surat and Guwahati, before landing in Goa on Wednesday night.
