Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday said the loan waiver may not be the complete solution but something has to be done for farmers when they are committing suicide.
"On one hand input cost has risen phenomenally and on the other hand, MSP (minimum support price) have crashed completely. It is a double whammy on the neck of farmers which is why you got 16,000 farmers a year committing suicide in this country. So, you have to provide relief,” Scindia told CNBC-TV18.
Keeping its pre-election promise. the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh had waived farmers’ loans on December 17 within hours of chief minister Kamal Nath taking the oath.
Scindia, who was one of the contenders for the Madhya Pradesh chief minister's post, which eventually went to Kamal Nath, said no one had asked the then United Progressive Alliance -1 (UPA) to do a loan waiver but it did a loan waiver of Rs 72,000 crore.
On victory in the Hindi heartland, Scindia said it was a hard fought battle, but the people of all three states -- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh -- had pretty much made up their minds before elections.
A government that was anti-framer, anti-women security, anti-youth and employment with no vision was bound to be ousted and that is the resounding result across the full Hindi heartland in India, he said, adding that if at all this should be the warning bells for the BJP before the general elections.”
