The Citizenship Act has triggered violent protests across several parts of the country, with the national capital being one of the worst-hit after protestors set ablaze four public buses and two police vehicles as they clashed with the cops near Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday. The police detained around 50 Jamia students alleging they were involved in the violence which left nearly 60 injured. While the students were released the next day after the varsity union denied their involvement, tension prevailed in the national capital. Even as the situation remains tense at Jamia, here’s a look at the notable alumni of the varsity:
Shah Rukh Khan: After finishing his graduation from Hansraj College in Delhi, Shah Rukh Khan joined Jamia Millia Islamia for a master's degree in Mass Communications. He, however, left the studies midway to pursue his acting career. (Reuters)
Virender Sehwag: Cricketer Virendra Sehwag joined the college in 1997 and finished his BA in 2001. "In 12th I had passed English in compartmental and hence colleges in Delhi didn’t give me admission. It was then Jamia gave me admission," he had once said addressing an audience.
Barkha Dutt: Noted journalist Barkha Dutt received a Master's in Mass Communications from Jamia Millia Islamia Mass Communication Research Center. "Whoever responsible for arson, stones, torching buses must be punished. So must be those who forced students into urinals & libraries with excess force. judicial inquiry needed," she tweeted on Monday. (Facebook)
Kiran Rao: Producer, director and screenwriter by profession, Kiran Rao did her Master's from AJK Mass Communication Research Center at Jamia Millia Islamia. Rao, who is the wife of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, in 2016, co-founded Paani Foundation, an NGO, that aims to fight drought in Maharashtra. (PTI)
