INX media case: CBI can prosecute Chidambaram, Law Minister tells Centre
Feb 3, 2019 12:19 PM

In what could spell fresh trouble for P Chidambaram, the Law Ministry has told the Centre that the CBI can be granted sanction to prosecute the former Union minister in the INX media case.

A senior government functionary said the law ministry's opinion was sought on whether the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) demand to prosecute Chidambaram was legally sound.

The law ministry has now told the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that there was "no legal infirmity" in the CBI's request seeking prosecution sanction.

The ministry, he said, gave its opinion based on evidences provided by the premier investigative agency.

The CBI has already been granted approval by the Centre to prosecute Chidambaram in Aircel Maxis case.

The agency had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017 against alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.

The veteran Congress leader's son Karti Chidambaram was also arrested in the matter for allegedly receiving funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh in the case.

Former CM Devendra Fadnavis took the oath as the Shinde's deputy. Shinde, who was camping in Guwahati with rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, returned to Mumbai on from Goa on Thursday afternoon, following which he and Fadnavis met the Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to stake claim to form the government. Later in the day Fadnavis announced that Shinde would be sworn in as the new chief minister today. Fadnavis had said he didn't want to be a part of the government. However, BJP's national president JP Nadda later said that that the party's leadership thought it was important for Fadnavis to be a part of the cabinet. On Wednesday, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as the Maharashtra chief minister, just after the Supreme Court refused to stay the Governor's directive to his government to take a floor test in the Assembly. Thackeray's resignation capped a week-long drama of resort politics, where rebel Shiv Sena MLAs led by minister Eknath Shinde camped in luxury hotels and hopped on chartered jets from Mumbai to Surat and Guwahati, before landing in Goa on Wednesday night.
