Since 2011, January 25 is observed as 'National Voters' Day' by the government to spread awareness, and register each and every eligible elector in the electoral rolls.
The National Voters’ Day is also marked to celebrate the foundation day of Election Commission of India (ECI).
In the past seven decades, the number of eligible voters have increased from 17.3 crore to 83.4 crore. In the first general elections held in 1951, the voter turnout was 45 percent, while in 2014 general elections, 66 percent people turned up for voting.
The polling stations were increased to nine lakh in the previous general elections. Seventy years ago, there were only two lakh polling stations.
