The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is the third largest national political party in India and Mayawati is the party chief.

The party was formed mainly to represent Bahujans (literally meaning 'People in majority'), referring to people from the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes.

BSP was founded by Kanshi Ram in 1984, who named his protégée Mayawati as his successor in 2001.

The party follows the ideologies of Gautama Buddha, BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Narayana Guru, Periyar EV Ramasamy and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj.

Kanshi Ram founded the party under the influence of Ambedkar's ideology of serving the downtrodden group.

The BSP has its main base in Uttar Pradesh and its chief Mayawati has served as the chief minister of the state in the past.
