Supreme Court hears Fali Nariman's reply on media leak##Supreme Court hears Fali Nariman's reply on media leak

The Supreme Court started hearing sidelined CBI director Alok Verma's counsel Fali S Nariman's clarifications on the media leak of Alok Verma's confidential response to the Supreme Court. The apex court had earlier agreed to hear Nariman’s clarification at the end of the board today. Also, Nariman sought more time from the top court to clarify the alleged leakage of Verma's response which were to be submitted confidentially in court.

Earlier CJI Gogoi said, "Our efforts to maintain respect of the institution, is not being complied with. We will not hear anything today. We want to handover the papers that have reported on Verma's reply to Nariman in open court."

CJI also added that, "This court is not a platform for people to say whatever. This is for adjudication of rights of people. We intend to set it right."

A free press also has to be responsible press, says Fali S Nariman##A free press also has to be responsible press, says Fali S Nariman

The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned Central Bureau of Investigation Director Alok Verma's petition against being sent on leave till November 29.

Appearing for Verma, senior lawyer Fali S. Nariman slammed the media for publishing certain documents relating to the case which he said should not have been published.

"Even I read about it this morning...what are we to do with all the goofing around. A free press also has to be responsible press," Nariman said when asked by the court about the reports.

A visibly unhappy Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, simply said "for reasons that are not to be recorded, we are adjourning the case till Nov 29".

The Supreme Court is hearing a plea by Verma against an Oct 23 notification from the Department of Personnel and Training sending him on leave, simultaneously asking Joint Director Nageshwar Rao to perform the duties of the CBI director.

The court is also hearing another petition against Rao being asked to act as the CBI director.

Verma had started an investigation into CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana, who has also been sent on leave. (Cogencis)

CJI expresses displeasure over leakage of confidential information. Nariman says " I am disturbed. Any leak was unauthorized. Free press and responsible press should go hand in hand."
