BJP sounds the 2019 poll bugle: Here's what experts say
Jan 11, 2019 1:06 PM

BJP president Amit Shah on Friday projected the Lok Sabha polls as a clash of ideologies and likened it to the "decisive" third battle of Panipat between Marathas and the Afghan army, saying the election results will be equally significant for the country.

In his inaugural address at a party convention in New Delhi, he dismissed the proposed grand alliance of opposition parties as a "sham", saying they are a disparate group with neither a leader nor any policy and have been brought together by their greed of power.

He also asserted that the BJP wants Ram temple to be constructed at the earliest in Ayodhya, drawing huge applause from thousands of party members, and accused the Congress of creating hurdles in the issue's early resolution in the Supreme Court.

Targeting the opposition, Shah said its proposed alliance has no nationwide relevance and the BJP had defeated each of them in 2014, claiming that the party is sure to come back to power with a bigger majority. It had won 282 of 543 seats in the last Lok Sabha polls.

Shaina NC, BJP spokesperson; Dinesh Varshney, Communist Party of India; Manisha Priyam, political analyst; Rasheed Kidwai, senior journalist and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former chief miister of Assam discussed the expectations from 2019 general elections.

Shaina said, “The amount of work done on the ground, whether it's reaching to 6.5 crore families through Ujjwala, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or even the kind of initiatives of Jan Dhan Yojana, pension scheme, insurance schemes have percolated down to the poorest of poor. So in view of all of this, I do not think there is going to be a worry as Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas has happened and that is why Abki baar phir Modi Sarkar."

Kidwai said, "In cricket, if you are trying to hit a six, there is a real chance of getting stumped and that is the real worry of the BJP. This entire talk at the national convention is to boost the morale as the loss in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have shaken the BJPs confidence and Narendra Modi’s ability to win election."
