Startup Street: Only a few sellers are protesting against the company's policies, says Gopal Pillai of Amazon India

Gopal Pillai, vice president of Amazon India Marketplace, on Wednesday said protesting against the e-commerce platform is like saying STD booths have evaporated because of mobile phones.

Pillai said that technology and e-commerce are here to help small and medium businesses (SMBs) digitise and reach global audience, not just the local audience.

At the Amazon India event for small and medium enterprises in New Delhi, he said that the company will double its investment in the country when things start working.

"Outside there are only a few people who are protesting but inside we have more than 3,000 SMBs sitting there and want to be part of this," Pillai added.

Pillai also said the one billion dollar investment by Amazon will boost sales and amplify exports.

Amazon founder and world's richest man Jeff Bezos also arrived in the national capital for a three-day visit on Tuesday to attend the event.

Bezos said 21st century will be an Indian century. His visit comes just days after the Competition Commission of India launched a probe against Amazon and Flipkart over allegations of unfair business practises.

Traders association has accused Bezos of "predatory pricing" and "anti-competitive practises", which Amazon has denied.

Bezos also promised to export goods worth $10 billion that are made in India in five years.
