Netflix Reportedly Set to Raise Prices
The Wall Street Journal Reports
According to The Wall Street Journal, Netflix is poised to increase the cost of its ad-free streaming service. This price hike is expected to follow the conclusion of the ongoing actors' strike, with the U.S. and Canada being the initial markets to experience the change.
Current Pricing Structure
At present, Netflix's ad-free tier costs subscribers $15.49 per month. If they choose to share their password with another user, the monthly fee rises to $23.48. This represents a significant increase from the $8 monthly fee charged by the company in 2019.
Undisclosed Price Hike Amount
The specific amount by which Netflix intends to raise its prices remains undisclosed. However, this move follows a trend of price increases across streaming services. Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that the ad-free subscription to Discovery+ would increase from $6.99 per month to $8.99 per month.
Potential Consumer Backlash
Given Netflix's prominent role in negotiations with the actors' union, SAG-AFTRA, and the recent agreement reached with the Writers Guild of America, the timing of this price increase could potentially generate consumer dissatisfaction.
Netflix's Revenue-Boosting Efforts
Earlier this year, Netflix discontinued its $10 Basic ad-free tier. Additionally, the company initiated a crackdown on password sharing several months prior. These initiatives are part of Netflix's broader strategy to bolster its revenue and subscriptions, which experienced a slowdown towards the end of the pandemic.
Positive Impact of Enforcement
Netflix's efforts to enforce its no-password-sharing policy, which commenced on May 23, have yielded positive results. Data from third-party analyst Antenna indicates that nearly 100,000 individuals signed up for Netflix accounts on both May 26 and May 27.
No Change to Ad-Supported Tier
It is anticipated that subscription prices for the ad-supported tier will remain unchanged following the conclusion of the actors' strike.
