India-China border talks: Two sides hold 2nd round of military talks to defuse tensions after the Galwan Valley face-off
Jun 18, 2020 8:25 AM

The line of actual control (LAC) remains tense as India and China hold the second round of Major General level talks to defuse tensions. This comes after the first round of dialogue on Wednesday proved ''inconclusive”. India has hit out at China for claiming sovereignty over the Galwan Valley, where 20 Indian soldiers, including a colonel, were killed in a violent faceoff with the Chinese army on Monday night. New Delhi has termed China's claim as "exaggerated and untenable".

On the other hand, China has warned that India must not misjudge the current situation or underestimate their will to safeguard its territorial sovereignty. It maintains that Indian front-line troops broke the consensus and crossed the LAC, deliberately provoking and attacking Chinese soldiers.

As tensions rise in the border, the Modi government is working on a multi-pronged strategy to reduce the dependence on Chinese exports. The telecom department has asked companies to consider reviewing orders with Chinese companies and the railways have cancelled a signals contract with a Chinese company citing poor progress.

CNBC-TV18’s Parikshit Luthra is here with details about the military talks that are currently underway and the fresh statements issued by both nations.
