As a developing country, India can't print much money right now, says Arvind Panagariya
Apr 22, 2020 11:58 AM

Former NITI Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya on Wednesday said as a developing country, India can't print much money right now. His comment came on the back of ongoing debate over whether printing more money is appropriate measure to get over the economic impact of coronavirus .

With just 10 days to go for the extended nation-wide lockdown to end, there was some hope in a few circles that the government would unveil the next phase of its economic stimulus package today. However, that has not happened.

India's coronavirus count has crossed 20,000-mark with nearly 16,000 active cases. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will connect with state chief ministers on Monday to discuss the pandemic and the resultant lockdown.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, I&B minister Prakash Javadekar has said that an economic package will be announced separately as and when it's ready.

To discuss what needs to be done to ensure that the Indian economy steps up once the COVID crisis is over, Shereen Bhan spoke to Arvind Panagariya.
