The Philadelphia Semiconductor index rose 3%.
In corporate news, Roper Technologies ( ROP ) said that it has agreed to buy CentralReach, an autism therapy software provider, in a $1.65 billion deal. Roper shares added 0.7%.
Apple ( AAPL ) committed up to 720 million Chinese renminbi ($99.3 million) to expand its clean energy capacity in China. Apple ( AAPL ) shares rose 0.5%.
Super Micro Computer ( SMCI ) shares shed 0.7% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the company to sell from neutral and cut its price target to $32 from $40.
