The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) advanced 0.5%.

In corporate news, Abbott Laboratories ( ABT ) shares fell 2.8%. A state appeals judge in Missouri ordered a retrial in a civil lawsuit related to the company's infant formula.

Palisade Bio ( PALI ) shares jumped nearly 9% after the firm said it started dosing ulcerative colitis patients in the final cohort of its phase 1a/b study of PALI-2108.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals ( REGN ) shares fell 2.4% after media reports said that a US appeals court denied the company's request to block sales of biosimilar versions of its drug Eylea.

Sutro Biopharma ( STRO ) shares sank 30%. The company said late Thursday it appointed Jane Chung as its new chief executive and plans to nearly halve its workforce.
