US equity indexes traded mixed after midday on Tuesday as investors remained vigilant to headline risk relating to trade tariffs that the Trump administration plans to announce on April 2.
Energy
iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) gained 0.3% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 0.4%.
Technology
Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) gained 0.4%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also advanced.
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 0.5%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dipped 0.2%.
Financial
Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) was up 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) gained 1.3%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) declined 1.3%.
Commodities
Crude oil fell 0.4%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) shed 0.6%. Natural gas dropped 1.4%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 1.5% lower.
Gold was 0.5% higher on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 0.5%. Silver rose 2.3%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) gained 2.1%.
Consumer
Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was 0.8% lower; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were in the red.
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) added 0.4%; retail fund VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was steady, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) dropped 0.5%.
Health Care
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was 1% lower, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) declined. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 1.3%.
Industrial
Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) rose 0.1%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were fractionally higher.
