Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Decline After Midday

01:12 PM EDT, 03/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower Thursday afternoon. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.4%.

US equity indexes fell after President Donald Trump warned the European Union of significant import duties on alcohol products while cooling producer prices failed to inspire market confidence.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) lost about 0.3% each.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was down 1.5%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were softer.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 0.7%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dipped 0.3%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) lost 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) fell 1.3%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) added 0.7%.

Commodities

Crude oil dropped 1.3%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 1.5%. Natural gas added 1.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) rose 2.1%.

Gold was up 1.6% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 1.7%. Silver was 2.1% higher, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) gained 1.8%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 0.4%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) was weaker while iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) edged up.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) lost 2.5%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) was down 1.1%, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) declined 2.3%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was 0.3% down, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) eased 0.5%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) was down 0.6%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were lower.
