Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Tuesday as Stock-Selling Frenzy Subsides

08:01 AM EDT, 08/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up nearly 1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 1.1% higher in Tuesday's premarket activity, as the stock selling frenzy subsided amid a stream of earnings.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.9%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.7% and Nasdaq futures gaining 1% before the start of regular trading.

The international trade in goods and services bulletin for June will be released at 8:30 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 2.8% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF ( BITO ) was also 2.8% higher.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.4%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was up 0.2% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) and the iShares Biotechnology ETF ( IBB ) were inactive.

RxSight ( RXST ) shares were up more than 25% premarket after the company reported forecast-beating Q2 results late Monday and raised its 2024 revenue guidance.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLK ) was up nearly 2%, while the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 2.5% lower. The iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 1.5%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) advanced 2%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF ( SOXX ) rose by 2.2%.

NCR Voyix ( VYX ) shares were up more than 11% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company said it agreed to sell its digital banking business to an affiliate of Veritas Capital for $2.45 billion in cash plus future additional contingent consideration of up to $100 million.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.5%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 0.9%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Celsius Holdings ( CELH ) stock traded up more than 7% pre-bell after the company reported higher Q2 earnings and revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was down 3.8%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.8%.

Marathon Petroleum ( MPC ) was up 6% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company reported Q2 adjusted earnings of $4.12 per diluted share, down from $5.32 a year earlier.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 1.2% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was inactive. The iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was down 5.3%.

Caterpillar ( CAT ) shares gained nearly 5% before the opening bell after the company reported forecast-beating Q2 adjusted earnings and revenue.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLF ) gained nearly 1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 2.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 2.7% lower.

Nasdaq (NDAQ) stock was up 1.1% pre-bell Tuesday after the company reported US matched equity volume of 39.6 billion shares in July, up from 33.9 billion shares a year earlier.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.1% to $73.03 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.4% at $1.95 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) fell 1.1%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 0.3% lower.

Gold futures for December gained 0.3% at $2,451.20 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures lost 0.3% at $27.14 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) advanced 0.2%, and iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) fell 0.7%.
