Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Edge Higher Pre-Bell Tuesday Amid Ongoing Tariff Confusion

08:36 AM EDT, 03/25/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.3% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.2% in Tuesday's premarket activity amid ongoing confusion regarding what tariffs will be implemented by US President Donald Trump.

US stock futures also edged higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler is scheduled to speak at 8:40 am ET.

The Case-Shiller Home Price Index and the Federal Housing Finance Agency House Price Index, both for January, are due at 9 am ET.

New York Fed President John Williams speaks at 9:05 am ET.

The Conference Board's consumer confidence report and the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, both for March, and the new home sales report for February are all scheduled for 10 am ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 1% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.1% lower.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) declined 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) retreated 0.4% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 0.2%.

Mural Oncology ( MURA ) stock was down more than 48% premarket after the company said that it will stop development of nemvaleukin alfa for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer as it believes a phase 3 trial of the drug combined with Merck's ( MRK ) Keytruda is "highly unlikely to achieve success" at the final analysis. Merck ( MRK ) stock was up 0.3% in recent premarket activity.

Winners and Losers:

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.4%.

Prairie Operating ( PROP ) stock was down more than 19% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company said late Monday it priced an underwritten public offering of $38.5 million common shares at $4.50 apiece.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) was inactive while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was up 1.5% and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Cadeler ( CDLR ) stock was up nearly 6% before the opening bell after the company reported higher 2024 earnings and revenue.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.7%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.7% lower.

Qifu Technology ( QFIN ) shares were down more than 3% pre-bell Tuesday after the company said it plans to offer $600 million of convertible senior notes due 2030.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was flat, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was up 0.1%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) rose 0.9%.

Smithfield Foods ( SFD ) shares were up over 2% pre-bell after the company reported its first quarterly results since going public in January.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.02%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was down 0.4%, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was flat. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) advanced 0.1%.

Pony AI (PONY) shares were down nearly 1% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company reported a wider Q4 non-GAAP net loss and lower revenue.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.6% to $69.53 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.7% at $3.94 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) gained 0.6%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) rose 0.8%.

Gold futures for June gained 0.4% to reach $3,055.40 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures advanced 1.6% to $33.98 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) increased 0.5%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1.5% higher.
