07:48 AM EDT, 04/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union will put a 90-day pause on its counter tariffs against the US as it wants to "give negotiations a chance," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a X post Thursday.
"While finalizing the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days," Leyen added.
The EC president also said that if talks are not "satisfactory," the countermeasures will "kick in."
President Donald Trump imposed 25% duties on EU steel and aluminum exports last month. Wednesday Trump announced a 90-day pause on a 20% "reciprocal" tariff rate that was set to hit EU exports. The rate is now 10%.
The now paused EU tariffs would hit an estimated $23.2 billion of US goods.
