11:31 AM EST, 01/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) Canadian unit will close its facilities in Quebec within the next two months and cut more than 1,700 jobs, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday, citing the company.
The retailer is looking to shut down seven operation sites, one fulfillment center, two sorting centers, three delivery stations, and one AMXL delivery station, CTV News said, adding the decision will affect 1,700 permanent employees and 250 temporary workers.
Amazon ( AMZN ) spokesperson Barbara Agrait said that after a recent evaluation of the company's operations in Quebec, the company has decided to return to a third-party delivery model supported by small local businesses, according to the reports.
"As to whether this decision is due to the efforts of the union, I answer: it is about offering the best possible service to our employees," Agrait was quoted as saying by Radio Canada.
Amazon.com ( AMZN ) didn't immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
