06:44 AM EDT, 04/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOGL) autonomous driving unit Waymo is set to begin collecting data in Tokyo with human-operated vehicles next week, marking the company's first expansion outside of the US, multiple news outlets reported Thursday.
The company will use 25 electric Jaguars to map key areas of the city, Reuters quoted Nicole Gavel, head of Waymo's head of business development and strategic partnerships, as telling reporters at an event in Tokyo.
Waymo is mapping the city in cooperation with Japanese taxi firm Nihon Kotsu and ride-hailing service Go, with the goal of testing autonomous vehicles with drivers once the mapping phase is completed, Reuters reported.
Waymo did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
